                                IMAGINATION

It is designed to make us think in millions,
billions, to make us run out of numbers and collapse
into infinity, but perhaps the answer is simply one:
one female angel dancing alone in her stocking feet,
a small jazz combo working in the background.
She sways like a branch in the wind, her beautiful
eyes closed, and the tall thin bassist leans over
to glance at his watch because she has been dancing
forever, and now it is very late, even for musicians.

Six generations of beautiful women.  Women who endured losing husbands, endured two world wars, endured the fear for a brother and son in combat...women who survived the Great Depression, women who bravely moved across country to pursue dreams and women who loved and cared for their families. The morning sunlight accentuates their photos, but wait!  Why are the generations in reverse order?  Are we retracing steps back in time?   Or....was the photograph taken in a mirror?   Possibly, but either way, it reflects an interesting concept:  no matter the order or era, the women all lived amazing lives.

As summer changes to autumn, I watch the youngest member of The Mountain Crew blossom to a seasoned hiker.  As a father, it brings me joy that my little girl can navigate the Rocky Mountains trails without dad standing by her side.

30 and 31 years ago two very important humans left this existence.  Their little boy died a small death at the time, too.  Although he had married the love of his life and had two wonderful children of his own, he was still wounded beyond comprehension.  How could he go on?  To face this harsh reality...one must have received an abundance of trust and love.  This little boy/man now approaches his 80th birthday.  He achieved this because of the trust and love he has received in his life from all of his family, but especially from these two extraordinary beings.

Parent’s wedding gift
From so very long ago
Who will care for it

This is something that haunts me.
Who will keep it safe
When I’m gone?

The girl looked out her window at the moon. It was almost full, and though the sky was not yet fully dark, it shone brightly amidst the buildings surrounding it.

She wondered to herself if he was also looking at the moon right now. There is something so intimate about having a shared experience despite not being in the same place. Just knowing that they both could be looking at the same moon together at the exact same moment comforted her mind and heart.

No, they were not together right now. But perhaps they were staring at the moon together in the same place somewhere in time, her wrapped in his arms, his fingers interlaced with hers, in some parallel universe, or perhaps in the spiritual realm where their souls rendezvous.

She realized at that moment that they were very much like the two buildings on either side of the moon. Both standing resolute, neither making the first move, as stoic as ever. And there hangs the moon between them: their emotions in suspension, this shared experience, their shared light. Yes, they share each other’s light.

Alone, taking in the beautiful brick buildings, the tree lined streets, the alternately blue then cloudy sky, listening to birds chirp. Alone in a place so beautiful and I am completely bewildered how such horrific events unfolded here, in the buildings, under the trees, under blue skies and clouds, in a place so seemingly peaceful, and yet the land bears no scars. The only scars are carried by the people. How is this possible?

I took this photo of Kris in costume on the set of "Planet of the Apes" when it was being filmed in 2000. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit the set on the Big Island of Hawaii, where it was being filmed on the property of a friend, with another friend serving as an extra in the cast. He was very nice and I spoke to him four times on different occasions during the day. We talked about his high school years in San Mateo California, where I was also from. In our first conversation, he had fake blood on his arm, and I said, “Oh, you're hurt!" And he replied, “It's just a scratch.”

A cat gazes out a sunny window. At first glance, it appears to show his reflection. But, it’s possibly the ghost of another cat from long ago, basking in the sun, sharing the moment with him.
